ORTELIUS, Abraham. [One of the Most Decorative Maps by Ortelius]
Aegyptus Antiqua. Antwerp, 1584. Two sheets joined together. Original colour with later additions. 790 x 480 mm. Light damp staining in upper border.
Ortelius updated an earlier version of the map first issued in 1576 for the historical section (Parergon) of the Theatrum, and appeared in only a few editions being replaced by a single sheet map in 1595. Peter Meurer of the University of Utrecht has rightly described this map as "an outstanding example of early scientific research on Egypt" - Ortelius' scholarship was never more apparent than in the extensive research he conducted over a 20 year period working on this map. The harmonious aesthetic composition, superb engraving work and generous size also makes this one of the most visually stunning of all Ortelius maps.
[Ref: 9345]    £2,000.00 ($3,080 • €2,420 rates)

RAMUSIO, Giovanni Battista. [West Africa]
Parte del Africa Venice, 1606. Woodcut, printed area 280 x 380mm. Centerfold reinforced on verso. Excellent impression.
West Africa, from the Tropic of Cancer south to St Thomas, compiled by Gastaldi for Ramusio's 'Raccolta di Navigationi et Viaggi'. The interior is filled with lions, elephants, monkeys & camels, with a native village and the Portuguese fort at Elmina on the Gold Coast. This example was printed from the second block, cut in 1565 after the first was destroyed by a fire in the printing house of Thomaso Guinti after only a year's use. A noticeable difference is the mammalian faces of the seamonsters. The 1606 edition is recognisable by evidence of woodworm damage to the printing block and the pagination numbers '370' and '371'. NORWICH: 314, (second block illustrated).
[Ref: 7451]    £780.00 ($1,201 • €944 rates)

BEAUVAU, Henri de. [Cairo]
Le Grand Caire. Nancy, Jacob Garnich, 1615, 180 x 155mm
An exact copy on a very reduced scale of Braun-Hogenberg's view of Cairo, from Henry de Beauvau's "Relation Journaliere Du Voyage Du Levant". With a 15 point key to the most notable monuments.
[Ref: 10942]    £180.00 ($277 • €218 rates)

HONDIUS, Jodocus. [Barbary]
Barbarial; Cartaginensis Sinus; Aegyp. London: Henry Featherstone, 1625, English text edition. 145 x 185mm, set in text.
Three maps on one sheet: a main map of North Africa, with a title cartouche and mileage scale, and two smaller maps of Cartage, and Egypt. First published in the reduced version of the Mercator/ Hondius 'Atlas Minor' of 1607, the printing plates were sold to a London publisher in 1621 and appeared in 'Purchas His Pilgrimies', as this example. Later Dutch editions used new plates by Jansson.
[Ref: 8041]    £45.00 ($69 • €54 rates)

HONDIUS, Jodocus. [The Empire of Prester John]
Abissinorum Regnu. London: Henry Featherstone, 1625, English text edition. Coloured. 135 x 180mm, set in text, with four other text leaves.
A reduction of Hondius's map of Abyssinia, first published in the 'Atlas Minor' of 1607. The printing plates were sold to a London publisher in 1621 and appeared in 'Purchas His Pilgrimies', as this example. Later Dutch editions used new plates by Jansson. Of greater interest perhaps is the English language text accompanying the map: it contains a general description of the area; a description of Mombasa in Kenya; an account of the Voyage of Sir Francis Alvarez to the court of Prester John (from Hakluyt's papers); and an account of the dealings with Matthew, Prester John's Ambassador (from Ramusio). These texts shed a little light on the origins of this legend.
[Ref: 8061]    £250.00 ($385 • €303 rates)
